What Is a Friction Feeder Machine?

A friction feeder machine uses controlled friction rollers or belts to separate a stack of flat products and dispense them one at a time. It replaces repetitive manual placement and supplies products at controlled intervals to another machine or process.

Depending on the product being handled, the same type of equipment may also be called a:

  • Card feeder.

  • Leaflet feeder.

  • Sheet feeder.

  • Paper feeder.

  • Envelope feeder.

  • Paging machine.

  • Page separator.

These terms describe similar feeding functions. The correct model should be selected according to the product—not only the machine name used in a search.

When Should You Use a Friction Feeder?

A friction feeder may be suitable when you need to:

  • Insert warranty cards, instruction leaflets, coupons, or manuals into packages.

  • Feed one card or sheet during each packaging-machine cycle.

  • Count cards, labels, tags, or other flat products before bagging or cartoning.

  • Feed products consistently into an inkjet coder or labeling system.

  • Reduce repetitive manual product placement.

  • Detect potential double feeds or missed feeds during production.

  • Connect a stack of flat products to an automated packaging workflow.

Product samples should be tested when products are unusually thin, flexible, glossy, static-prone, curled, embossed, perforated, or irregularly shaped.

Integration with Packaging, Coding, and Labeling Lines

JEWSHIN friction feeders can be evaluated for connection with the following types of equipment:

Flow Wrapping Machines

Feed cards, labels, instructions, or other inserts into horizontal flow wrapping processes. The feeder output must be synchronized with the packaging-machine cycle and product spacing.

Cartoning Machines

Dispense instruction leaflets, warranty cards, or promotional inserts into open cartons. Confirm the required orientation, drop position, and communication signals before integration.

Automatic Bagging Machines

Feed cards, envelopes, stationery products, or inserts into compatible OPP, PE, or self-adhesive bagging processes.

Inkjet Coding Systems

Separate products individually and pass them through TIJ, CIJ, or other compatible coding equipment for batch numbers, dates, barcodes, or variable information.

Labeling Systems

Supply products at controlled intervals for label application. Product position, spacing, and surface stability should be verified during application testing.

Conveyor and Inspection Systems

Transfer separated products to conveyors, cameras, counters, or other downstream processes where compatible interfaces are available.

Common Applications by Industry

Printing and Stationery

Feed greeting cards, red packets, postcards, brochures, notebooks, envelopes, and hang tags into packaging, coding, or labeling processes.

Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Packaging

Dispense instruction leaflets, warranty cards, product information sheets, or compatible sachets. Buyers in regulated industries should independently validate the complete process against their quality and compliance requirements.

Food Packaging

Feed coupons, promotional cards, recipe cards, or other inserts into compatible multipack and secondary-packaging operations. Confirm whether the application requires specific material or hygiene controls.

Apparel and Textile Products

Feed hang tags, brand cards, care cards, and promotional inserts into labeling or packaging workflows.

E-Commerce and Fulfillment

Process return forms, invoices, promotional inserts, and other flat documents used in order packaging.

How to Select the Right Friction Feeder

Measure the Complete Product Range

Record the minimum and maximum product length, width, and thickness. If several products will use the same feeder, provide dimensions and production quantities for every format.

Describe the Product Material and Surface

Feeding performance can be affected by:

  • Paper or plastic construction.

  • Glossy, laminated, or coated surfaces.

  • Static electricity.

  • Product flexibility or stiffness.

  • Curled or folded edges.

  • Embossing, perforations, or uneven thickness.

  • Friction between stacked products.

Dimensions alone do not guarantee reliable feeding, so representative samples are recommended.

Define the Required Feeding Pattern

Confirm whether you need:

  • One product per machine cycle.

  • A fixed count of products per batch.

  • Continuous feeding at controlled spacing.

  • Feeding triggered by an external signal.

  • Feeding synchronized with a host machine.

Provide the Downstream Equipment Information

If the feeder will connect to a flow wrapper, cartoner, bagging machine, coder, labeler, or conveyor, provide:

  • Machine type and model.

  • Direction of product travel.

  • Working height.

  • Required feeding position.

  • Host-machine cycle rate.

  • Trigger and communication requirements.

  • Available installation space.

Test Representative Samples

Send samples from the smallest, largest, thinnest, thickest, and most difficult products in your range. Testing only the easiest product may not represent normal production conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a friction feeder machine used for?

A friction feeder separates stacked flat products and dispenses them individually into another process. Common uses include feeding cards, leaflets, envelopes, sheets, sachets, and inserts into packaging, coding, labeling, cartoning, or counting equipment.

What is the difference between a friction feeder, card feeder, leaflet feeder, and sheet feeder?

These names usually describe the same general machine type according to the product being fed. A card feeder handles cards, a leaflet feeder handles leaflets, and a sheet feeder handles larger sheets. Model selection should be based on actual dimensions, thickness, material, and application requirements.

Is a friction feeder the same as a paging machine?

In many equipment listings, “paging machine” refers to a device that separates stacked flat products and feeds them individually. For international packaging applications, “friction feeder,” “card feeder,” “leaflet feeder,” and “sheet feeder” are generally clearer terms.

Which model should I choose?

Choose the JX-100 for small products, the JX-200 for medium-sized cards and envelopes, or the JX-300 for wider and larger sheets. Final selection should also consider thickness, material, surface condition, and the downstream process.

How fast can the feeder operate?

The listed adjustable conveying speed is 10–160 m/min. This is not the same as products per minute. Actual production output depends on product length, required spacing, feeding pattern, and host-machine cycle rate.

Can the feeder detect double feeds and missed feeds?

The listed control system includes sensor-based detection for double feeds and missed feeds. Detection performance depends on the product and sensor setup, so requirements should be confirmed using representative samples.

Can one feeder handle different products?

A feeder may handle multiple products within its working range, but each product should be assessed for dimensions, thickness, flexibility, surface friction, and separation performance. Settings may need to be adjusted during changeovers.

Can a friction feeder connect to my existing machine?

It may be possible to connect the feeder to a compatible flow wrapper, cartoner, bagging machine, coder, labeler, or conveyor. Provide the host-machine specifications so the mechanical and electrical interfaces can be reviewed.

Is a friction feeder a complete packaging machine?

No. A friction feeder separates and supplies products to another process. It does not independently form bags, seal packages, close cartons, print codes, or apply labels unless it is combined with the relevant downstream equipment.

Should I send samples before ordering?

Yes. Sample testing is recommended, especially for thin, glossy, flexible, static-prone, curled, folded, embossed, or irregular products. Send representative samples from your complete product range.
